Escape the hustle and bustle of busy St Helier and take the day at a slower pace. Head down to St Aubin, where life seems to wind down a little, and food and drink just taste that much better.
Set alongside one of Jersey's original harbour locations, St Aubin is a mixture of old and new and retains a certain charm that keeps visitors and locals coming back for more. There's a host of restaurants, cafes and pubs to be found amongst the steep streets and historic buildings; many of which boast amazing panoramic sea views. The vast majority of these can be found on the promenade, or to give it its official name, The Bulwarks. Although cars are permitted along The Bulwarks, the area is more popular with pedestrians and offers a safe and fascinating destination for an afternoon or evening stroll.
Originally constructed in the 19th century, as part of the harbour foundations, The Bulwarks, and the elaborate homes that still sit alongside it were financed mostly by wealthy merchants of the time. St Aubin was Jersey's first real harbour, specifically selected as it provided a more sheltered position than St Helier.
Many of the restaurants and cafes positioned on The Bulwarks provide shaded alfresco courtyard areas from which to enjoy a glass of wine from or, alternatively, sun-drenched decks for an ice-cold local beer. Should you wish to grab something to eat, you won't be disappointed wherever you choose to stop.
St Aubin is proud of its heritage and unique laid-back atmosphere. Come down and experience for yourself the magic of Jersey's 'other' town. Picturesque and quaint yet modern and inviting. A truly unique combination.
St Aubin and The Bulwarks are a little under 4 miles from St Helier and both are perfectly accessible by foot. It takes a little under an hour for an average paced walker and it's flat all the way. Toilets and places to grab a quick drink are dotted along the route. Cycling is another great option with a specifically designed path all along St Aubin's bay, from St Helier right into the heart of The Bulwarks. There is also an electric passenger-carrying train that operates all day throughout the summer months.
