Chimneys should be swept a minimum of once a year for solid fuel,oil and gas. If your chimmey starts smoking it indicates that it needs sweeping. The best time to sweep your chimney is when you have stopped using your fire for example in the summer months, this way you avoid the problem of rain causing the soot to drop down the chimney and make a mess.
