Focus on a Parish - St Clement

by MaryMoppet 1st May 2023

At 4.2 square kilometres, St Clement is the smallest but second most populated parish. This is in part due to it's combination of both beaches and small patches of rural land, but not too far to travel into St Helier. The parish stretches west to east from Le Dicq towards La Rocque harbour.

Much of the parish lies beneath equinoctial tide level which made it subject to regular flooding and subsequent coastal erosion. The coastal defences at Le Dicq were built in order to prevent additional erosion. The remains of a submerged forest have been discovered underneath the beach of Grève d'Azette which shows how much the parish has reduced in size. Flooding in the late seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries caused extensive erosion. As a result, the coast road at Le Hocq was diverted further inland.

This community focussed parish has it's own website at parish.gov.je keeping parishioners up to date with official businesses and the latest local news. If you're visiting St Clement you may wish to seek out some of it's pubs, restaurants and shops:
